Every parent encounters problems with their child at some point in their life, those frustrating times can be confusing for both the parent and child. But, there are 5 basic parenting skills that each parent can learn to minimize the frustration and help to teach the child proper attitude and behavior.
1. One of the most important things is to make sure that you are being consistent with your child. It is hard to have consistency, especially when the child is throwing a tantrum, but that consistency will help you to avoid future problems. Setting boundaries will help the child to understand what the rules are and the child will know that their parents will hold them accountable for those rules.
2. Stay patient with your child even when you are frustrated. Patience can go a long way, especially when you are trying to avoid a major conflict. Remember that your child is young and they are still learning, teach them that patience can help to lower the stress levels and improve relationships.
3. Listen to your child and speak to them kindly, show them that you love them by the way that you treat them and talk to them. Listening to what they have to say shows that you really care about their life and they will begin to trust you and want to confide in your more.
4. Learn techniques to manage behavior– both good and bad behavior. Your child will act out, plan for those times and know what you are going to do to help them calm down and stay in control of their emotions. Also, recognize the good things that your child does, positively reinforcing their good behavior will promote better behavior in the future.
5. Follow through on what you say, stick to the rules. When a child realizes that their parent is not going to enforce the rules or follow through on rewards / punishment they will learn that they can push the boundaries. Following through is an important aspect in teaching your child about consequences to their behavior, both good things and bad things.
